Let’s explore the fascinating world of Tina Thompson-Pope and her artistic endeavors. Tina Thompson-Pope wears many hats: Executive Director, Producer, Choreographer, and Founder of The Tina Thompson Dance Company. Now, that’s a résumé with rhythm! ? Her company, also known as SKIN Dance Company, pulses with innovation and creativity in the dance universe. Based in New York, they blend distinctive dance forms with boundless energy, propelling art into new horizons. One of their captivating productions is “Josephine’s Cotton: The Revue”. Picture this: a time machine fueled by song and dance, whisking you back to the Harlem Renaissance.
Through reflections, fierce choreography, and elaborate costuming, Tina Thompson channels the spirit of Josephine Baker. But wait, there’s more! The stage also hosts icons like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Belafonte, and even Little Richard. It’s like a jazz-infused time capsule! And what’s the secret sauce? Tina Thompson herself—producer, director, choreographer, and visionary—weaves together the threads of Harlem’s 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. Imagine the Cotton Club era and beyond, all wrapped up in a multimedia presentation of timeless pioneers. But here’s the twist: Josephine Baker, born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1906, found her true starry sky in Paris. There, racial segregation didn’t hold her back, and she became an instant sensation. Her iconic banana dance at the Follies Bergère still echoes through time. And remember, character and honor are a person’s greatest achievements, not just popularity. Tina Thompson embodies that spirit—a dancer, mentor, muse, and artistic force.
Mission and Vision: SKIN aims to provide opportunities, challenges, and infrastructures for personal growth to its artists, students, community, and future generations. Their mission is to foster artistic value and self-expression through the language of theatre and movement arts. International and Cultural exchange in the Arts is our purpose.
